It was also measured and recorded by the Historic American Engineering Record in 1975. Its internal grinding machinery survives largely intact.","narrative":"This octagonal smock windmill, 2½ stories and 29½ feet high, sits on a half-acre triangular village park at Route 27 and Halsey Lane in Water Mill. It was built in 1800 at North Haven and moved to Water Mill in 1813. Originally a grist mill, it now serves as a decorative park feature. Its conical cap has two dormers and is turned into the wind by an external tailpole connected to a wagon wheel. The nomination identifies it as the only surviving Long Island windmill with this tailpole arrangement. Much of the internal machinery remains, including two pairs of French burr millstones, a brake wheel, a great spur wheel and iron regulators. Dry rot has deteriorated some structural elements. The Historic American Engineering Record measured and recorded the mill in 1975. It was nominated as part of a group of Long Island wind and tide mills, with themes of architecture, industry and engineering.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Octagonal smock mill with conical cap pierced by two dormers","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as deteriorated; dry rot has damaged structural elements.
