Clad in shingles and topped with a boat-shaped cap, it was built in 1810 at Southold by Nathaniel Dominy V of the noted East Hampton family of craftsmen. The mill was moved to Shelter Island in 1840 and ground grain commercially until 1879. In 1926 it was moved again, to the Sylvester Manor estate, where it now serves as a decorative feature. Its wood frame uses interlocking joints, and much of the internal machinery survives, including the brake wheel, wallower, millstones, bolter and an internal capstan winder used to turn the cap. A replacement windshaft was installed in 1952. It is one of four surviving Long Island windmills attributed to the Dominy family and is valued as an example of wood technology and regional craftsmanship.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Nathaniel Dominy V","architectural_style":"Octagonal smock mill with boat-shaped cap","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition rated good; no threats known.
