It was built about 1850 by Walter F. Brewster.","why_significant":"The house was built by Walter Brewster, who was primarily responsible for the early development of the village, including the railroad depot, Main Street and more than fifty houses. It is also a rare large-scale Greek Revival residence in the area, with a two-story continuous colonnade described as unique to the county.","narrative":"Set on a hill above the Village of Brewster in Putnam County, this two-story frame house was planned and built around 1850 by Walter Brewster. It is surrounded by a giant portico with fluted Ionic columns rising two stories to a dentiled cornice. The plan was originally a square with a central hall and four rooms on each floor. The upper story keeps its plaster walls, mouldings, hardware, shutters and marble mantels, while the first floor was opened into one large room and covered with paneling. Brewster bought the old Baily farm, established a railroad depot, laid out Main Street, built more than fifty village houses, operated iron mines and founded the Brewster House Hotel. Large Greek Revival residences are rare in the area, and the two-story colonnade is unique in the county. A local preservation society acquired the vacant house and planned restoration.","period_of_significance":"c.1850","architect_builder":"Walter F.
