It is the least changed and most imposing of the city's older public buildings. The nomination argues that no other structure of its style and period in the county equals it in scale and quality, giving it regional architectural significance.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Main and South Main Streets in Oneonta, this post office was announced in 1913 and completed in 1915 to designs by Oscar Wenderoth. The nearly square, seven-bay building is faced in Indiana limestone with Concord granite trim and rises two stories above a full basement. A giant portico with six Greek Corinthian columns marks the front, and Greek Corinthian pilasters divide the sides. A low brick wing for a loading dock was added at the rear in the 1950s. Inside, a long marble and wood service counter echoes the arched windows, and the two-story sorting room has a surveillance bridge. Oneonta grew as a railroad center after 1869, and its public buildings reflect that prosperity. Urban Renewal removed much of the older Main Street, and the post office was once slated for demolition before public protest saved it. It is the least altered of the city's older public buildings and has no equal in the county for scale and quality.","period_of_significance":"1915","architect_builder":"Oscar Wenderoth","architectural_style":"Neoclassical","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and in good condition, owned by the City of Oneonta, which was considering reuse for municipal offices and jail facilities.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.879438-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/78001895.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001895/1a1a1a521a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001895/1a1a1a521a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Post_Office_Oneonta_NY_Apr_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Post_Office_Oneonta_NY_Apr_10.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03001245","name":"Oneonta Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/oneonta-downtown-historic-district-03001245/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320968","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Post_Office_(Oneonta,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7084769"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/otsego-county/old-post-office-78001895/"}
