St. Paul's is also one of the earliest parishes in Onondaga County, founded in 1826, and counted prominent Syracuse citizens among its congregation. It became the cathedral of the Central New York Episcopal Diocese in 1972.","narrative":"St. Paul's Cathedral is an English Gothic Revival church on the corner of Fayette and Montgomery Streets in downtown Syracuse. Built in 1884-85 to designs by church architect Henry Dudley, it is faced in local rock-faced limestone with sandstone trim and is topped by a 225-foot stone spire. The spire's weight is carried by inverted arches beneath the nave. Inside, cherry wood furnishings, a marble altar, a Tiffany window and a London-made apse window stand out. Hadley Chapel, the first building on the site, adjoins the sanctuary, as does a three-story brick parish house designed by Syracuse architect Alfred Taylor and built in the early twentieth century. The parish dates to 1826, one year before Syracuse was incorporated as a village, and its members included mayors, judges and other civic leaders. In 1972 the church became the cathedral of the Central New York Episcopal Diocese, which led to the parish house being renovated for the bishop's offices.","period_of_significance":"1884","architect_builder":"Cathedral: Henry Dudley; Parish House: Alfred Taylor","architectural_style":"English Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in religious use; the parish house has been altered through the twentieth century and houses the bishop's offices.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.622247-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/78001891.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001891/f1e2333d22-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001891/f1e2333d22-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Crazyale","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Pauls_Syracuse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Crazyale</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Pauls_Syracuse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"80004278","name":"Montgomery Street-Columbus Circle Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/montgomery-street-columbus-circle-historic-district-80004278/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320457","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Paul%27s_Episcopal_Cathedral_(Syracuse,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7402015"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/st-pauls-cathedral-and-parish-house-78001891/"}
