The firm occupied it until 1937. The building is also a near-copy of the 16th-century Palazzo Grimani in Venice, designed by a leading architectural firm.","narrative":"Built in 1905 at the southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 37th Street in Manhattan, this seven-story building served as the Tiffany and Company store until 1937. McKim, Mead, and White designed it as a nearly exact copy of the Palazzo Grimani in Venice, using an iron frame with white marble and terra cotta. Three tiers of windows made it look only three stories tall. The lot cost $2 million, then a record for a New York site. Tiffany, founded in 1837, was widely regarded as the leader of the American jewelry trade and helped bring the British sterling standard into U.S. law. A 1952 renovation replaced the original ground-floor show windows and removed most interior decor, and a floor was added. The upper facades remain largely unchanged, and the top floor keeps its marble vaulted ceiling. The Tiffany vault survives in the basement.","period_of_significance":"1905-40","architect_builder":"McKim, Mead, & White","architectural_style":"Copy of the 16th-century Venetian Palazzo Grimani, with Corinthian columns, entablatures and arched windows","criteria":[],"status_note":"Upper floors vacant for several months and the building in receivership and advertised for sale at the time of the form; first-floor storefronts altered in 1952.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.825865-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/78001886_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001886/dce7a42ba8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001886/dce7a42ba8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof at English Wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tiffany-lower.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof at English Wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tiffany-lower.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315894","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiffany_and_Company_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7801275"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/tiffany-and-company-building-78001886/"}
