It is the oldest building in the village of Red Hook and the only surviving gambrel-roofed structure there. It also hosted town government meetings for more than twenty-five years.","narrative":"Standing on a half-acre corner lot beside Route 9 in Red Hook, this two-story frame building began about 1750 as a house and tavern. It has a modified gambrel roof, clapboard siding now covered with asphalt shingles, and four chimneys. After 1783 a southern addition increased its size by half, and further changes were made before 1830. Inside, plaster walls, wide plank floors, heavy oak beams and Federal-period mantels with carved sunbursts survive. A 1797 map labels it Elmendorph's Inn, and by 1811 it was known as Loop's Hotel. From 1815 the town board met there regularly until 1842. In the nineteenth century it was divided into apartments, and a kindergarten operated in it in the 1890s. It served as a residence for the first half of the twentieth century. It is considered the oldest building in the village and the only surviving gambrel-roofed structure there. A local group acquired it with plans to restore it.","period_of_significance":"c. 1750, 1800","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Unrestored; sold in 1966 and left vacant until purchased by a local group planning restoration; the form lists status as work in progress and unoccupied.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.891302-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/78001850.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001850/745963e2c8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001850/745963e2c8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elmendorph_Inn,_Red_Hook,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elmendorph_Inn,_Red_Hook,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317345","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmendorph_Inn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1332899"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/elmendorph-inn-78001850/"}
