Bradford was a Continental Army lieutenant, a sea captain who lost a leg in an encounter with French privateers in 1800, and later a trustee of the Massachusetts Historical Society.","narrative":"Built in 1807 on the main road between Plymouth and Boston, this Duxbury house was home to Gamaliel Bradford, a member of the prominent Bradford family. Square in plan with a two-story rear ell, it has a truncated hip roof with a monitor, brick side elevations and clapboarded front and rear. A Doric porch shelters the center entry, which has sidelights and a fan. Inside, a central hall, eleven-foot first-floor ceilings and most of the original paneling remain. Bradford served as a young lieutenant in the Continental Army, then commanded ships, declining command of the frigate Boston in 1797 and losing a leg to French privateers in 1800 while commanding the Industry. He retired from the sea around 1802. The house later served as a boarding house and private school, and was owned by a Unitarian minister's family and then the artist Charles Bittinger. A small barn and an 1840 cottage built from salvaged church materials stand across the dooryard.","period_of_significance":"1807","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Privately owned and occupied as a private residence; the form marks the condition as altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.402301-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/7965/63796538/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/78001402.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001402/e19746f586-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001402/e19746f586-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DuxburyMA_GamalielBradfordHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DuxburyMA_GamalielBradfordHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796538","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capt._Gamaliel_Bradford_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5036423"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/plymouth-county/bradford-capt-gamaliel-house-78001402/"}
