Its irregular double-ell plan and high-pitched all-hipped roof differ from most registered Italianate houses, which have symmetrical plans. It is also nearly unchanged since it was built and sits on its original five-acre site.","narrative":"Pinehill is an Italianate country villa on five acres of landscaped grounds in Oregon, Illinois. Merchant William Judd Mix began building it in the fall of 1873 and moved in during 1874. The house is local red brick over wood frame, with limestone window arches and keystones, a high square cupola, and a six-sided veranda along the south side. Inside are seven marble fireplaces, a walnut staircase, plaster cornices and brass hardware. Its irregular double-ell plan and entirely hipped, high-pitched roof set it apart from the symmetrical Italianate houses more commonly found in Chicago and Galena. The nomination values it chiefly for architecture, noting that it remains almost exactly as built, with no additions to the original structure. Later owners were prominent local families, and sculptor Lorado Taft and author Somerset Maugham are reported to have visited. A two-story carriage house stands behind the residence.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"William Judd Mix - Owner","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, on its original site and lived in continuously since 1874, with only minor alterations such as a 1966 kitchen update and a 1967 reroofing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.4301-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/8937/28893791/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/78001179.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001179/21068283b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001179/21068283b4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"Andy McMurray","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ogle_County_Pinehill_Inn_Oregon_Il1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy McMurray</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ogle_County_Pinehill_Inn_Oregon_Il1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893791","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinehill_Inn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7195489"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/ogle-county/pinehill-78001179/"}
