It holds township offices and records on the first floor and a public meeting hall on the second.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is a fine, nearly unaltered example of Georgian Revival (Neo-Colonial) architecture. It is also unusual as a township hall of monumental scale and architectural merit, since most Illinois townships lack the tax base for such a building. It has long been the center of township and village activities.","narrative":"Lyons Township Hall in La Grange, Illinois, was designed in 1900 by the Chicago firm Stiles and Stephens to hold township offices and records on the ground floor and a public meeting hall upstairs. Set well back from and above LaGrange Road, it is a symmetrical 2½-story building of red brick with buff Bedford limestone and terra cotta trim, white brick quoining, a bracketed and dentilled iron cornice, and Palladian-style windows. Entrances carry Ionic columns and molded terra cotta ornament, some of it depicting lions. Inside are mosaic and tile floors, marble wainscoting, a birch staircase, and a meeting hall with a maple floor and a proscenium stage. The building was listed for its architecture as a well-preserved example of Georgian Revival design and as a rare township hall of monumental scale. It has served as the center of township and village life, hosting plays, concerts, dances, graduations and meetings, and it houses an American Legion post of World War I veterans.","period_of_significance":"1900","architect_builder":"Stiles and Stephens","architectural_style":"Georgian Revival Neo-Colonial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, virtually in mint condition with few alterations; still houses township offices, village offices and the annual town meeting.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.936392-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/8924/28892464/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/78001138.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001138/1b0588ef98-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001138/1b0588ef98-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"MrHarman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LaGrange_Village_Hall_exterior_02.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">MrHarman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LaGrange_Village_Hall_exterior_02.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892464","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Grange_Village_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q97332740"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/lyons-township-hall-78001138/"}
