By 1860 it was one of the state's largest and most productive plantations, with 428 bales of cotton produced. The house, outbuildings and land have stayed in one family since the antebellum period.","narrative":"West Hill, known locally as Moye Farms, is a working plantation about six miles south of Lumpkin in Stewart County, Georgia. Its centerpiece is a two-story Greek Revival house, believed to have been built by David Harrell in 1836, with a double portico, eight Doric columns and a winding stair in the central hall. Behind the house stand a commissary and meat house, a double kitchen, a blacksmith's shop, cook's quarters and a privy, along with a one-room schoolhouse from 1853 and three slave quarters in an area called the Grove. William West bought the plantation in 1853, and by 1860 it held thousands of acres and produced 428 bales of cotton, far above the average. The 202.5-acre tract, Land Lot 182, remains farmland, woodland and tenant land and has stayed in the same family. It was listed because it survives as an unusually intact antebellum plantation complex.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"David Harrell (house believed built by him, 1836)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition and occupied, used as a private residence and for agriculture; the house has been altered only slightly.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.384692-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/78001006.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001006/b32a1d23c9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78001006/b32a1d23c9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rivers Langley; SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_Hill;_Lumpkin,_GA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivers Langley; SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_Hill;_Lumpkin,_GA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209510","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134457218"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/stewart-county/west-hill-78001006/"}
