It is the birthplace of William Gibbs McAdoo, later Secretary of the Treasury under Woodrow Wilson, and the only surviving structure in Georgia associated with his life. It is also a fine example of a Greek Revival raised cottage.","narrative":"Set about 200 yards back from U.S. Highway 5 southwest of Marietta, this one-and-a-half-story Greek Revival house dates to about 1850. It rests on a coursed fieldstone basement and has a heavy timber frame, weatherboard siding, nine-over-nine windows and a pedimented portico with four square Doric columns. Inside, two rooms flank a central hall. Though some mantels, trim and balusters have been removed, the house survives as one of few antebellum plantations left in an area ravaged by the Civil War. Its owners included a merchant and court clerk, a minister who ran a boarding school there, and attorney William Gibbs McAdoo Sr., whose son William Gibbs McAdoo Jr. was born in the house in October 1863. The son became Secretary of the Treasury under Woodrow Wilson and a U.S. senator from California. The house came through the 1864 Battle of Kolb's Farm with slight damage and is the only surviving Georgia structure tied to McAdoo.","period_of_significance":"c. 1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (raised cottage)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence rented to tenants; the form lists its condition as deteriorated, with original fireplaces, mantels, some trim and stair balusters removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.340653-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/78000975.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000975/ab123c6f64-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000975/ab123c6f64-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lneville64","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wm_G._McAdoo_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Lneville64</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wm_G._McAdoo_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207593","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Gibbs_McAdoo_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55637712"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/cobb-county/mcadoo-william-gibbs-house-78000975/"}
