It was built in 1913 by builder Earle Younger.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is a good example of Second Renaissance Revival commercial architecture from the early twentieth century. It is Woodland's largest downtown commercial and office building, sits at the corner of two key streets, and retains its original integrity. It has also housed long-running local businesses and the post office.","narrative":"Built in 1913 at the corner of Main and College Streets, this three-story commercial and office block is the largest downtown building in Woodland. Builder Earle Younger constructed it for the Porter Brothers in tan brick with white terra cotta Renaissance details. A two-story colossal order rises above the commercial ground level, slightly projecting corner bays carry rusticated quoins, and a heavy bracketed cornice caps the composition. Console brackets, a keystone and a balustrade mark the lobby entrance, and marble stairs run from the lobby to the third floor. The building is considered a good example of Second Renaissance Revival design, a style that was new to the Sacramento Valley at the time. Over the years it held the post office, a medical center, a department store, physicians, dentists, attorneys and accountants, and some of Woodland's oldest businesses remained as tenants in 1978. Its exterior is little changed from early photographs, and it remains a focal point of downtown.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Earle Younger (builder)","architectural_style":"Second Renaissance Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described in 1978 as structurally sound with the exterior appearing much as it did in 1916; some offices were vacant while interior restoration continued, and the building was still occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.276611-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/78000828.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000828/a3622a6317-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000828/a3622a6317-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Epolk","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Porter_Building_-_Woodland,_CA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Epolk</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Porter_Building_-_Woodland,_CA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"99000471","name":"Downtown Woodland Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/downtown-woodland-historic-district-99000471/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123862402","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porter_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7231597"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/yolo-county/porter-building-78000828/"}
