It also reflects vernacular European building traditions brought by the French and Italian settlers of the Napa Valley. It is named for its use as a French Steam Laundry in the early 1900s.","narrative":"Built about 1900 at the corner of Washington and Creek Streets in Yountville, this two-story building combines a double-wall first story of basaltic fieldstone with a frame upper floor under a low hip roof. Stonemason Gus Clark, a Scottish immigrant who lived at the California Veterans Home, built it for Peter (Pierre) Guillaume, who came from the Spanish Pyrenees. It first held the Eagle Saloon. In 1907 John B. Lande, from the French Pyrenees, bought it and ran the French Laundry on the ground floor while his family lived upstairs. The laundry served many families across the central Napa Valley until 1936, after which the building was a residence. It was listed as the only remaining example of Clark's fieldstone double-wall work in Yountville and as an expression of French and Italian building traditions brought to the valley. At the time of nomination it was being renovated as a restaurant.","period_of_significance":"c. 1900","architect_builder":"Alexander (Gus) Clark","architectural_style":"Vernacular architecture of the kind common to provincial towns in Spain and France","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, with renovation as a restaurant underway at the time of nomination; used as a residence by a series of owners since 1936.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.232544-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/78000728.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000728/004f0d576c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000728/004f0d576c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Peter Merholz","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_French_Laundry.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Merholz</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_French_Laundry.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860016","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_French_Laundry","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2364717"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/napa-county/french-laundry-78000728/"}
