O.B. Ackerman & Son of Eureka were the contractors, for John M. Vance.","why_significant":"The nomination argues local significance in architecture because the hotel remains largely intact after 74 years and shows typical Humboldt County turn-of-the-century features. It is the only remaining hotel-resort of several that once served travelers along the Overland Stage Route. It is also tied to lumberman and railroad developer John M. Vance and to the early 1900s resort era.","narrative":"Carlotta Hotel is a three-story wooden hotel on Central Avenue in Carlotta, Humboldt County, about 28 miles southeast of Eureka. Construction began in the fall of 1903 for lumberman John M. Vance, who laid out the town and named it for his youngest daughter. O.B. Ackerman & Son of Eureka built the 36-by-80-foot structure, which opened in 1904 and was leased to a series of proprietors. It has a hip roof, paired shed dormers, bracketed eaves, shingle and board-and-batten siding, and a long veranda with a balcony. Early advertisements promoted it as a summer resort with Sunday dinners, hunting and fishing. Later, under the Matteucci family, it was known for Italian food, and its upstairs rooms housed lumber and construction workers. Comparison of 1907 and 1974 photographs shows little exterior change. It was nominated as the last surviving hotel-resort along the old Overland Stage Route and for its link to Vance, and it was undergoing careful restoration.","period_of_significance":"1903-1904","architect_builder":"O.B.
