The nominated property also includes a water tower and a low rock wall.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is significant for its association with the development of El Dorado County and as an excellent, now rare example of brick architecture in the county, with fine craftsmanship and detailing. It is one of the largest buildings of its type to survive in the Mother Lode region and remains in its original setting.","narrative":"Three stories of brick rise beside State Highway 49 near Pilot Hill, California. Alcander Bayley built the hotel in the early 1860s after fire destroyed his earlier Oak Valley House. He made about 300,000 bricks and milled the lumber on site, at a cost of $20,000. Bayley expected the Transcontinental Railroad to pass through Pilot Hill, but the Central Pacific took a route to the north, so he used the building as a private residence and ranch headquarters. The L-shaped, classical-style building has a two-story porch with six wooden columns, brick pilasters and lintels, dentiled eaves and a truncated hipped roof with an observation platform. It is listed as a rare surviving example of brick architecture in El Dorado County and one of the largest buildings of its type in the Mother Lode region. It stands in its original setting, though the porch, balustrades and staircase parts have been lost and the openings are boarded.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Alcander Bayley","architectural_style":"Simple mid-nineteenth century classical","criteria":[],"status_note":"Deteriorated: porch floors, balustrades and stair parts removed, openings boarded up; owned by El Dorado County, which wants to save it but has no specific plans or funds.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.941071-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/78000660.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000660/f134c21ecd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000660/f134c21ecd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"YankeeSpirit","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bayley_House_2014.09.18_A.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">YankeeSpirit</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bayley_House_2014.09.18_A.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858600","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayley_Hotel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q126595331"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/el-dorado-county/bayley-hotel-78000660/"}
