It was built in 1894 by Lucien Lord.","why_significant":"The building has been a major visual landmark in downtown Athol since its construction because of its size and scale. It was long the largest non-industrial building in the city and remains the largest built as a hotel. It is also the major surviving historic structure in the commercial center and retains a high degree of original fabric and design elements.","narrative":"Rising four stories above Pequoig Square in the center of Athol, Massachusetts, this red brick hotel was built in 1894 by local real estate developer Lucien Lord. Granite and terra cotta trim accent the walls, and the design draws loosely on classical sources. The eleven-bay Main Street facade has a recessed center section with a foliated terra cotta parapet and a three-story metal oriel embossed with the name Pequoig, two Indian head profiles and the date. Stylized Ionic pilasters and a deep bracketed cornice mark the projecting end sections. Upper floors keep their original detail, while the ground-floor storefronts have been altered over time. The building was listed because it has served as a visual landmark through its size and scale. For many years it was the largest non-industrial building in the city, and it remains the largest built as a hotel. It was Lord's largest project. It also retains a high degree of original fabric and design.","period_of_significance":"1894","architect_builder":"Lucien Lord","architectural_style":"Design elements derived chiefly from classical sources but handled in a free manner","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and deteriorated; the upper stories retain original detail, the ground-floor storefronts have been altered, and an entertainment lounge occupied the ground floor at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.537054-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/7972/63797226/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/78000469.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000469/8722353283-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000469/8722353283-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Marcbela (Marc N.
