It was built by Captain Joel Robinson.","why_significant":"The house is the oldest in its part of Attleboro and was owned by nine generations of the same Robinson family, on land they had held since 1713. Its builder, Captain Joel Robinson, was a Revolutionary War veteran, militia captain, farmer and housewright. Reviewers also noted it as an intact, straightforward example of a late eighteenth-century farmhouse.","narrative":"Captain Joel Robinson built this farmhouse around 1790 on land his family had held since 1713, in a wooded residential part of Attleboro. It is a two and one-half story, gable-roofed, clapboarded house with a central chimney, a five-bay south facade and a six-panel door under a semicircular fan. Much original interior finish survives, including raised-panel fireplace walls, built-in cupboards, wide pine floorboards and fireplaces in all six main rooms. A kitchen ell was added in 1863, and a replacement garage followed the removal of the unsafe original barn in 1963. The house is the oldest in its part of Attleboro and stayed with the same family for nine generations. The Robinsons were among the first three families to settle the area. Joel Robinson served in the Revolution, was a militia captain, and is believed to have built several other period houses in town. The road was renamed Rocklawn Avenue c. 1890 after a large red sandstone boulder on the lot.","period_of_significance":"1790","architect_builder":"Joel Robinson","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition; privately owned and occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:55.081583-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/7945/63794516/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/78000428.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000428/c6541e5808-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000428/c6541e5808-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rberesford","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Capt._Joel_Robinson_House,_Attleboro,_MA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Rberesford</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Capt._Joel_Robinson_House,_Attleboro,_MA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794516","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capt._Joel_Robinson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5036434"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/robinson-capt-joel-house-78000428/"}
