Its recessed entrance and tooled stone facade are singled out, and its setting above the canal adds to its importance. It is little altered apart from dormers and a new end chimney.","narrative":"Perched on a steep hillside above the Ohio and Erie Canal in Valley View, this one-and-one-half-story sandstone house was built for Edmund and Charlotte Gleason between about 1851 and 1855. It is five bays wide, with a central recessed entrance, sidelights, a broken entablature, a wide plain frieze and a gable roof with returns. The facade has tooled stone, while the side and rear walls use dressed stone sills and lintels. A spindle porch was added around 1880. In 1939 a rear frame addition was removed, dormers were added and a new end chimney was built, yet the house remains little altered. Inside is a central hall plan. The Gleasons' descendants, including grandson Edwin Carey, kept the property in the family, farming the land and building a gambrel-roofed barn in 1905. The house is regarded as one of the finest in the Cuyahoga Valley and one of two sandstone houses on Canal Road. It lies within the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific dates c. 1851-1855)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as good condition, occupied private residence on its original site; part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area.
