Herbert Maier and Ansel Hall designed it with rough-dressed granite walls, large segmental arched openings, an asymmetrical gable roof of wood shingles on peeled log supports, and a semicircular terrace overlooking the valley. Inside, three engraved aluminum plaques with embossed photographs identify the geological features visible from the deck. Funded by the Yosemite Natural History Association, it opened in 1925 as the first trailside museum in the National Park system and drew over 15,000 visitors in the summer of 1927. It is valued for education and as an example of Rustic architecture built from native materials to blend with its setting. It continues as an interpretive site with ranger-naturalist talks in summer.","period_of_significance":"1924","architect_builder":"Herbert Maier and Ansel Hall (designers); National Park Service (builder/architect listed)","architectural_style":"Rustic style, as developed in Yosemite","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still an interpretive facility with displays and summer ranger-naturalist lectures; a new wooden floor was laid in 1975 and geological exhibits were replaced in the late 1960s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.284324-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/78000357.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000357/a5091d40ea-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/78000357/a5091d40ea-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wearsunscreen","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glacier_Point_Trailside_Museum.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Wearsunscreen</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glacier_Point_Trailside_Museum.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"77000160","name":"Yosemite Valley Bridges","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/yosemite-valley-bridges-77000160/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859742","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacier_Point_Trailside_Museum","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5566155"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/mariposa-county/glacier-point-trailside-museum-78000357/"}
