It represents the early history of the county and its role in the growth of West Texas. It also has fine exterior masonry and interior wood and metal work, and few old Texas courthouses retain as much original fabric.","narrative":"Built in 1900-1901 for $20,500, this two-story limestone courthouse in Sherwood, Texas, served Irion County until 1936, when voters moved the county seat to Mertzon by 453 to 222. It was designed and built by Martin and Moodie, contractors from Comanche. The square plan has four entrances and matching facades, with arched porches, limestone balconies, owl carvings at the entrances and a sheet-metal-clad tower. Inside are yellow pine woodwork, a detailed stairway and stamped metal ceilings. After county use ended, the Sherwood Homemakers Club occupied it until 1951, then a Baptist church, which removed two ground-floor walls and added a truss. A private owner later donated its use to the community, and the Sherwood Homecoming has been held on the lawn since 1956. The nomination values its early county history and its largely original fabric. It is described as vacant and deteriorated, with leaks around the balconies.","period_of_significance":"1900-1901","architect_builder":"Martin and Moodie","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as vacant and deteriorated, with water leakage problems in the balcony features; the building is otherwise in virtually original condition.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.436154-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/9726/40972648/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/77001455.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77001455/35b77ee8fa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77001455/35b77ee8fa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Caesarscott","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sherwood_Courthouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Caesarscott</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sherwood_Courthouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972648","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Irion_County_Courthouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q56290736"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/irion-county/irion-county-courthouse-77001455/"}
