It is also tied to Montreville Hall, a prominent lawyer, farmer and Texas politician who took part in the secession movement and served the Confederacy. The house hosted prominent Texas leaders and later served as a gathering place for local conservative leaders during Reconstruction.","narrative":"Edgemont is a two-story brick plantation house on a hill about three miles west of Marshall, Texas. Built between 1844 and 1847 by W. R. D. Ward for lawyer and farmer Montreville Hall, it is a Greek Revival house with a hipped roof, two large interior chimneys and a central pedimented portico carried on white, fluted octagonal columns. Enslaved laborers made the bricks on the property from local clay. Each floor has a central hall with two rooms on either side, and much original material survives, including plaster walls, heart pine flooring, mantels, doors and hardware. Hall was a delegate to the secession convention, later served as assistant treasurer of the Confederacy for his region, and remained influential in Harrison County during Reconstruction. The house entertained notable Texans, including former governor Edward Clark. Twentieth-century additions, including a family room and rear porch, have been removed in an effort to return the house to its original appearance.","period_of_significance":"1840's","architect_builder":"W.R.D.
