Dodson.","why_significant":"The nomination cites both architectural and historic significance. It presents the building as a richly detailed Romanesque design by one of Texas' prominent nineteenth-century architects, with a composition unique among similar courthouses. The square has long been the focus of local political activity, and the courthouse has been the center of county government for about three-quarters of a century.","narrative":"Rising from an eminence in the center of Denton's public square, this three-story courthouse was completed in 1896 to a Romanesque design by architect W.C. Dodson. Contractor Tom Lovell built it for about $100,000. Dodson adapted the traditional cross-axial plan so that a tall central masonry tower could be supported by walls running through a single main corridor. Each facade has a projecting entrance pavilion with a Roman-arched opening, columns and a triangular pediment, and the corners carry balconies and towers with ogival roofs. Tan sandstone walls, red stone capitals and eighty pink granite columns from Burnet give the exterior its varied color. Inside, cast iron stairs and oiled wood paneling line the corridors. It replaced an 1876-1877 brick courthouse that had become unsatisfactory, which itself followed a frame building that burned in 1875. The building is noted for its architecture and as the center of county government, and it continues to serve its original function.","period_of_significance":"1895-1896","architect_builder":"W.C.
