It was one of the first houses built in newly settled Queen City. It is also tied to two prominent local businessmen, William Franklin Mathews and Ross Albert Powell.","narrative":"Built in 1878 on Miller Street in Queen City, Texas, this one-story frame house blends Greek Revival and Victorian features. A rectangular shape and central hall plan reflect the older style, while a five-bay front, slender gallery columns with punched spandrels, paired carved brackets, bargeboard gables and a bay window show Victorian flair. It was among the first houses in the new town, founded in 1877. William F. Mathews, a Confederate veteran and grocer who later ran a general mercantile store, built it and lived there until 1895. Later it housed a local physician, whose long central hall served as a hospital during local emergencies. In 1918 Ross Albert Powell, a merchant, undertaker and postmaster, bought it. Changes have been limited mostly to the rear, where a 1946 storm destroyed early additions. The house remains a private residence and preserves much of its original ornament.","period_of_significance":"1878","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Transitional Greek Revival/Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained as a private residence; condition listed as good, with rear additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.246861-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/9714/40971487/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/77001431.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77001431/81f25b03c5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77001431/81f25b03c5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mathews-Powell_House,_Queen_City,_TX.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mathews-Powell_House,_Queen_City,_TX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971487","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathews%E2%80%93Powell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6787057"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/cass-county/mathews-powell-house-77001431/"}
