It is also the best example in Butler County of a house design probably built by a single builder, with Greek Revival entryways resembling a plate in Asher Benjamin's The Practical House Carpenter. It is also tied to Robert Beckett and his son William, who were involved in early industrial development.","narrative":"Built in 1836 near Hamilton in Butler County, Ohio, this two-story brick farmhouse shows rural Ohio architecture moving from the Federal style to Greek Revival. The rectangular main block has a gabled roof, a chimney at each end, symmetrical openings with vertical-brick lintels, and original 6/4 window sashes. The recessed entrance is flanked by fluted Doric columns supporting a molded entablature with small dentils, and its design closely resembles a plate in Asher Benjamin's The Practical House Carpenter. A rear L-shaped wing combines brick and frame sections and includes a single-story summer kitchen. The house was built for Robert Beckett, a prosperous Hanover Township farmer who ran a saw and grist mill, helped lead an early turnpike company, and helped incorporate the Rossville Hydraulic Company. His son William later helped found a Hamilton paper mill. The Beckett family owned the house until 1877, and it later passed to a Methodist ministers' relief society and then to the Manrod family. Similar Butler County houses are probably the work of a single builder.","period_of_significance":"1836","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Transitional Federal and Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition; still used as a private residence, with the original 6/4 window sashes preserved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:08.937704-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/77001044.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77001044/1d811a4a32-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77001044/1d811a4a32-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jim.arrigon","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_under_tree_limb.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.arrigon</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_under_tree_limb.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986961","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beckett%E2%80%93Manrod_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4878685"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/butler-county/beckett-manrod-house-77001044/"}
