It is mainly a vernacular Italianate house of the 1870s that incorporates parts of an earlier Holt family house.","why_significant":"The house represents the long history of the Holt family in Alamance County. It was the birthplace of textile pioneer Edwin M. Holt and was enlarged by his son Lynn Banks Holt, an industrialist who came to own several cotton mills. It is also described as a well-preserved farmhouse with handsome late 19th century finish.","narrative":"Set in a grove of hardwoods south of the mill village of Alamance, this frame house combines a vernacular Italianate form of the 1870s with traces of a much older dwelling built by Michael Holt. Edwin M. Holt, a pioneer of North Carolina's textile industry, was born in the early house in 1807. His son Lynn Banks Holt expanded it after the Civil War, giving it a two-story east block, a two-story ell and a one-story north wing, with bracketed eaves, a sawn-work porch and a central corbeled chimney. Inside, plastered walls, heavy applied moldings and post-and-lintel mantels survive largely unchanged. L. Banks Holt ran the family's Alamance Cotton Mills with his brothers and eventually owned several mills. The property reflects the Holt family's move from farming to industrial prominence. It now houses the Alamance County Historical Museum, which hosts exhibits, craft shows and picnics, and a family cemetery lies just north of the house.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Italianate Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked excellent and altered.
