It was built in 1852 and enlarged in 1858-60 to designs by Detlef Lienau for merchant Francis Cottenet.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the finest examples of Italianate villa architecture in America, with an exterior and picturesque landscaping that remain largely as created before the Civil War. It is also the earliest surviving residence by architect Detlef Lienau, and the original plans survive. It was home to several families of note in American history.","narrative":"Nuits, also known as the Cottenet-Brown House, is an Italianate villa overlooking the Hudson River in Ardsley-on-Hudson, between Dobbs Ferry and Irvington. Architect Detlef Lienau designed it in 1852 for Francis Cottenet, a New York merchant, and wings were added in 1858-60. The house is faced in imported Caen stone and has low-pitched bracketed roofs, a central square tower, a great arched entrance, an octagonal conservatory and cast-iron porches. Its exterior and informal landscaping survive much as they were before the Civil War, though the interiors were altered later. The surviving plans are held in the Lienau Collection at Columbia University. The villa is described as Lienau's earliest surviving residence and was praised in 1866 by Benson Lossing. Later owners included Cyrus W. Field, John Jacob Astor, Manhattan College and Amzi Barber. The grounds now cover 4.5 acres, reduced from 65.","period_of_significance":"1852, 1858-59","architect_builder":"Detlef Lienau","architectural_style":"Italian villa (Italianate)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in excellent condition; the exterior stone is described as intact, while interiors were modified in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:40.111881-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/77000986.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000986/44f4d7b476-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000986/44f4d7b476-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nuits,_Ardsley-on-Hudson,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nuits,_Ardsley-on-Hudson,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323139","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuits_(Irvington,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7068819"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/nuits-77000986/"}
