Its design follows English prototypes and reflects continuing English taste after the Revolution. Surviving bills and contracts document the materials and building practices of the early 1800s.","narrative":"Boscobel is a two-story frame mansion on a bluff above the Hudson River, just north of Garrison in Putnam County. It was built between 1804 and 1806 for States Morris Dyckman, who had developed a taste for English Adamesque design during years spent in England. William Vermilye, a master builder and Dyckman's cousin, directed most of the work. Dyckman died in 1806 before completion, and the house stayed in the family until 1920. Facing demolition, it was bought in 1955 by the Friends of Boscobel and moved fifteen miles north from its original site at Montrose. Reconstruction used 1934 measured drawings and reused original parts, including corner posts, roof framing, chimneys and porches. The house is noted for its recessed pedimented portico, large central hall with an M-shaped staircase, and original neo-classical mantels and plaster decoration. Surviving bills and contracts record how it was built. It now operates as a house museum.","period_of_significance":"1804-06","architect_builder":"William Vermilye","architectural_style":"Adamesque / neo-classical (Federal period)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Reconstructed on a new site in 1955 and operated as an historic house museum; condition listed as excellent and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.355901-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/77000971.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000971/b90556b184-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000971/b90556b184-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Zeete","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boscobel,_Garrison,_NY_-_front_facade.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Zeete</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boscobel,_Garrison,_NY_-_front_facade.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321020","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boscobel_(mansion)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4947177"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/boscobel-77000971/"}
