It is a large, well-executed example of Romanesque architecture, and its size reflects the community's importance in the city's textile-mill economy. The school, residence and convent form a visually cohesive group with the church.","narrative":"Built in 1871 on Columbia Street in Utica, St. Joseph's is a brick church with limestone trim, designed in a robust German Romanesque manner. It is about 180 feet long, has a basilican plan and a long transept, and is fronted by two 130-foot pyramidal-roofed towers with corbeled brickwork. The interior is far more ornate, with scagliola-sheathed columns, a barrel-vaulted nave, Italian marble fittings, stained glass made about 1909 in Innsbruck, and a Kimball organ installed in 1911. A school (1885), convent (1891) and parochial residence (1906) stand beside it in matching brick. The complex served a German Catholic community drawn to Utica's textile industry, and members of the congregation carried out much of the masonry, marble work and carpentry. Its scale reflects the prosperity of that community during the peak of the city's mills. The parish later merged with the nearby Irish St. Patrick's parish in 1966.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque (German Romanesque influence; interior more Renaissance in feeling)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in good condition; the church is still in use by the merged St. Joseph's and St. Patrick's congregations, which combined in 1966.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.653546-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/77000967.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000967/2fd90c5b79-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000967/2fd90c5b79-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Agreen54","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Joseph%27s_Church_Utica.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Agreen54</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Joseph%27s_Church_Utica.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320249","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Joseph%27s_Church_(Utica,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7589114"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/oneida-county/st-josephs-church-77000967/"}
