It keeps a wealth of refined original decorative features, and few Federal houses remain as intact. It is described as a yardstick for judging other houses of the period.","narrative":"Built in 1824-25 on the west side of Market Street, between Monroe and Madison Streets in Manhattan, this townhouse is a surviving example of late Federal domestic architecture. William Clark was listed as the original owner, though he did not live there. The deeply recessed front doorway has a moulded elliptical stone arch, a console keystone, a leaded glass fanlight and sidelights, and the inner vestibule doorway repeats many of these elements. Original window lintels with central panels and rosettes, rusticated basement quoins and wrought iron stoop railings also remain. Inside, the original staircase, two parlors with carved entablatures, and a carved wooden mantelpiece with paired Ionic pilasters survive. Two upper floors were added later in the nineteenth century, replacing an original pitched roof. The house was listed because few Federal-period houses in New York remain as intact, and its doorway is one of the few of its era left in the city.","period_of_significance":"1824-25","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as a privately owned, occupied cooperative residence in fair condition and altered; two upper floors were added later in the nineteenth century, and a kitchen and lavatory were added at the rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.032095-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/77000959.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000959/72e7529ff3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000959/72e7529ff3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Americasroof","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:51-market-street.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:51-market-street.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03000845","name":"Two Bridges Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/two-bridges-historic-district-03000845/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319618","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/51_Market_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2893326"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/house-at-51-market-st-77000959/"}
