It was built about 1860.","why_significant":"It is traditionally identified as the home of the keeper of the east toll gate on the Flushing-North Hempstead Turnpike. It is a fine example of mid-nineteenth century vernacular frame architecture and one of few from the period left in Nassau County. It also shows early balloon frame construction and retains its carpenter Gothic design.","narrative":"Set on a knoll within Roslyn Cemetery in Greenvale, this small board-and-batten cottage dates to about 1860. It is traditionally identified as the dwelling of the keeper of the east toll gate on the Flushing-North Hempstead Turnpike, one of two toll houses believed to have been built at Roslyn when the road opened through the village. A December 1860 deed for the cemetery land mentions the new toll gate east of the village. Later cemetery expansion enclosed the house and the old turnpike right-of-way, which protected it from development along Route 25-A. The cottage is a one-and-a-half story frame building with scalloped bargeboards, paired four-over-four windows and a center hall plan. It is valued as a rare surviving example of mid-nineteenth century vernacular architecture and early balloon framing in Nassau County. A 1975-1976 restoration rebuilt the foundation and chimney, replaced the roof and porch, and returned the house to residential use.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1860","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular (carpenter Gothic, board and batten)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in 1975-1976 and in use as a private residence; condition listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.918563-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/77000952.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000952/d15d837c81-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000952/d15d837c81-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Antony-22","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Roslyn_East_Gate_Toll_House_2016.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Antony-22</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Roslyn_East_Gate_Toll_House_2016.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319217","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toll_Gate_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707492"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/toll-gate-house-77000952/"}
