It was built in 1787-1789.","why_significant":"It is one of a very few stone buildings west of Schenectady that remain from before 1790, and it retains enough original and very old fabric to rank among the more important survivors of that period. It also recalls the Palatine settlers who farmed the area during a time of danger and turmoil. Its sophisticated Georgian design is unusual for a rural setting.","narrative":"Standing at a rural crossroads about four miles north of the Mohawk River, this limestone church was built in 1787-1789 for the Reformed Dutch congregation of Stone Arabia. Palatine settlers, some Lutheran and some Dutch Reformed, had farmed the area since the early eighteenth century. After separate churches built in 1744 were burned in a Tory raid in 1780, the Reformed congregation rebuilt once peace returned. Philip Schuyler is recorded as the builder, and the cost was $3,378. The rectangular building has a Palladian window, stone arched lintels, a fine boxed cornice and an octagonal belfry that may have been added later. Inside, a single large space has side galleries on fluted wooden columns. Changes recorded in 1840 included closing an east entrance and a high ceiling. It is one of few stone buildings west of Schenectady surviving from before 1790. The listing also covers the old cemetery just west of the church.","period_of_significance":"1787-89","architect_builder":"Philip Schuyler (recorded as builder; attributed to)","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as a church; the form lists present use as religious and the data sheet gives function now as church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.326662-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/77000951.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000951/8bbfbe9119-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000951/8bbfbe9119-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reformed_Dutch_Church_of_Stone_Arabia_Sep_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reformed_Dutch_Church_of_Stone_Arabia_Sep_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319040","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reformed_Dutch_Church_of_Stone_Arabia","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7307510"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/montgomery-county/reformed-dutch-church-of-stone-arabia-77000951/"}
