It was built between 1895 and 1906 to a design by McKim, Mead, and White.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is architecturally significant as an example of American neo-classical design and historically significant as an important cultural institution. Only part of the architects' planned square complex was built, yet it expresses Brooklyn's civic pride and cultural sophistication at the turn of the twentieth century. Sculptural decoration by Daniel Chester French adds to its architectural importance.","narrative":"Along Eastern Parkway at the northern end of Prospect Park stands a four-and-a-half-story limestone museum designed by McKim, Mead, and White and built between 1895 and 1906. The architects envisioned an immense square with four inner courts, but only the north side and northeast quadrant were built, forming an L-shaped structure on about five acres. The Eastern Parkway facade is dominated by a central pavilion with an Ionic portico, a dome and sculpted pediment, flanked by end pavilions and topped with twenty heroic-sized figures. Daniel Chester French's sculpture adds to the exterior. The building grew out of the Brooklyn Institute, begun in 1843 and renamed the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences in 1890, and was financed by the City of Brooklyn and later New York City. It reflects the civic pride of Brooklyn after the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, and it remains a museum with galleries and public programs.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900- (design 1893; construction 1895-1906)","architect_builder":"McKim, Mead, and White","architectural_style":"Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in use as a museum; the Institute uses it for offices, exhibits and educational, theatrical and musical programs.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.504599-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/77000944.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000944/273c1cc0a0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000944/273c1cc0a0-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brooklyn_Museum_June_2008_sunset_jeh.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brooklyn_Museum_June_2008_sunset_jeh.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318331","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn_Museum","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q632682"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/brooklyn/brooklyn-museum-77000944/"}
