Byrne's works of the 1920s are rare, and the building anticipates later Art Deco architecture. It also carries sculptural decoration by Chicago sculptor Alfonso Iannelli.","narrative":"Immaculata High School occupies the northeast corner of Marine Drive and Irving Park Road in Chicago. Architect Barry Byrne designed and built it in 1921-1922 for the Sisters of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The brown tapestry brick walls have limestone trim, and the red tile roof carries copper-clad dormers. Pointed windows, angular dormers and a sculptural main entrance supply the decoration. Above the original entrance is a large statue of the Virgin by sculptor Alfonso Iannelli. The auditorium is the most elaborately decorated room, with Art Deco details. A large westward extension of the west wing in the 1950s added a new main entrance, so the original doorway is now used for ceremonies. Byrne trained with Frank Lloyd Wright and later worked for many Catholic clients. This is his only school in the Chicago area, and it is a rare 1920s work that anticipates Art Deco architecture.","period_of_significance":"1921-1922","architect_builder":"Barry Byrne","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition and in educational use; the west wing was extended in the 1950s, adding a new main entrance.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.485397-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/8921/28892168/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/77000476.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000476/757dce77b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000476/757dce77b5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Harold Allen, Photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Immaculata_High_School_(Roman_Catholic),_640_West_Irving_Park_Road,_Chicago_(Cook_County,_Illinois).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Harold Allen, Photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Immaculata_High_School_(Roman_Catholic),_640_West_Irving_Park_Road,_Chicago_(Cook_County,_Illinois).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84000937","name":"Buena Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/illinois/buena-park-historic-district-84000937/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892168","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immaculata_High_School_(Chicago)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6004283"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/immaculata-high-school-additional-documentation-77000476/"}
