Arnoldus Brumby, with a small frame cottage at the rear.","why_significant":"The house is thought to look substantially as it did in 1851 and displays typical Greek Revival lines, including six Doric columns, a pedimented porch and a shouldered-architrave entrance. Its flared Egyptian-style interior door mouldings are unusual in the Marietta area. It was also the home of Col. Brumby, superintendent of the Georgia Military Institute, the county's most important educational institution until Federal troops destroyed it in 1864.","narrative":"Built in 1851 on Powder Springs Street in Marietta, this one-and-a-half story frame house was the residence of Col. Arnoldus Brumby, superintendent of the Georgia Military Institute from its opening in 1851 to 1859. The school stood next door, on the present site of the Marietta Country Club, and was the county's most important educational institution until Federal troops destroyed it in 1864. Six Doric columns carry a pedimented porch, and the entrance has a shouldered architrave, transom and sidelights, all typical of the Greek Revival. Inside, doorways with flared, Egyptian-style mouldings are unusual for the Marietta area. The interior was remodeled in 1926, when a kitchen wing was added and porch floors were replaced with brick, but the exterior is thought to look much as it did in the 1850s. A small frame cottage sits behind the house. Brumby, a West Point graduate, later served as colonel of the 14th Georgia Regiment and sold the house after the war.","period_of_significance":"1851","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as private, occupied and altered; the exterior is thought to look substantially as it did in the 1850s, and the interior was remodeled in 1926.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.763356-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/77000417.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000417/25862e7d17-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000417/25862e7d17-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Nilesrob","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brumby_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nilesrob</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brumby_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207557","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnoldus_Brumby_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55604227"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/cobb-county/brumby-arnoldus-house-77000417/"}
