George Washington Tully Carter bought five acres near San Gregorio Creek in 1865 and built a two-story gable-roofed hotel of redwood, which opened in 1866 and became the core of a small village. John R. Evans bought it in 1875 and enlarged it by seven bays to the north, adding a veranda with a balcony across the front. Later owners kept it running into the twentieth century. It served as a stage station for coaches between San Mateo, Redwood City and Pescadero, and as a retreat for sportsmen and summer visitors. Surviving outbuildings include a carriage shed, laundry house, granary, barns, a dance hall and a smokehouse. A former saloon later became a gas station. The nomination argues the hotel is the area's only remaining country hotel and one of few early California hotel complexes linked to stage travel, still largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 and 1900","architect_builder":"George Washington Tully Carter","architectural_style":"Described as having a feeling of Greek Revival, though the form says it is hard to identify with a single style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked good and unaltered; the form lists present use as a private residence, with a former gas station and outbuildings also noted.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.25857-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/77000341.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000341/36343d0e9f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000341/36343d0e9f-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EAST_FRONT_AND_NORTH_END_-_San_Gregorio_House,_San_Gregorio_Road,_San_Gregorio,_San_Mateo_County,_CA_HABS_CAL,41-SAGR,1-4.tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EAST_FRONT_AND_NORTH_END_-_San_Gregorio_House,_San_Gregorio_Road,_San_Gregorio,_San_Mateo_County,_CA_HABS_CAL,41-SAGR,1-4.tif"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861554","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Gregorio_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q35768130"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-mateo-county/san-gregorio-house-77000341/"}
