It is also an excellent, relatively intact example of Victorian Italianate architecture, marking a shift from earlier adobe buildings to American styles and building techniques.","narrative":"This two-story wood frame house at 2465 34th Avenue in Oakland was built in 1870 by Antonio Maria Peralta after an 1868 earthquake damaged the adobe structures of his family's hacienda. It is the last remnant of the headquarters of Rancho San Antonio, granted to Luis Maria Peralta in 1820, where the first permanent dwelling in Oakland was erected in 1821. The rancho was known in the 1840s for hospitality, with about twenty adobe guest houses at its peak. The house is a Victorian Italianate farmhouse with classic window frames and caps, a bracketed cornice and a one-story front porch with turned Doric columns. It was moved across the street in 1897 but remains on the original hacienda site. Later changes include garages added in 1928 and 1936 and plumbing and foundation repairs. Its relatively high integrity and its contrast with the earlier adobes illustrate the growing influence of American building styles in the area.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Antonio Maria Peralta, Sr. (builder/owner)","architectural_style":"Victorian Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied in the classification section; condition marked good.
