Kingman and built in 1886.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an exceptional example of the Queen Anne style and the first and finest red brick and terra-cotta house of its kind in Brockton. It is also noted for its unusual south-side entrance, its stained glass, and interior fresco paintings by Alexander Pindikowsky. It is tied to Kingman, a shoe and boot industry figure and banker, and to architect Minor.","narrative":"Built in 1886 at 309 Main Street in Brockton, this red brick and terra-cotta mansion was designed by architect Wesley Lyng Minor for Gardner J. Kingman, a shoe and boot industry businessman who also subdivided land in Campello and served as a bank director and savings bank trustee. The 2½-story house has an irregular plan, a red slate roof with intersecting gables, decorated chimneys, a wide Palladian window dated 1886, and many stained glass windows. Its main entrance and porch face south, which allowed a more monumental facade toward Main Street. Inside, hand carved cherry, oak and mahogany woodwork and parquet floors accompany fresco paintings by Alexander Pindikowsky. The house was acquired in 1927 for use as a funeral home, which added a porte cochere, and later gained an elevator and garage. A carriage house was demolished in 1960. It is described as the finest Queen Anne house in Brockton and as little altered.","period_of_significance":"1886","architect_builder":"Wesley Lyng Minor","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a funeral home since 1927; condition listed as excellent and the building has been little altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.160931-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/8/7965/63796508/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/77000196.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000196/669ac8f184-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000196/669ac8f184-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gardner_J._Kingman_House,_Brockton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gardner_J._Kingman_House,_Brockton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796508","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardner_J._Kingman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5522603"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/plymouth-county/kingman-gardner-j-house-77000196/"}
