It was built around 1740 by Nathaniel Bacon.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an unaltered example of early to mid-18th century brick-end transitional Georgian architecture and the only house of that period and type in Bedford. It is also one of two surviving structures from the small mill community that grew up around John Wilson's 1680 corn mill. Its owners, among them an Indian fighter, a militiaman, a Minuteman and millers, contributed to the town's early development.","narrative":"Built around 1740, this two-story house at 118 Wilson Road in eastern Bedford, Massachusetts, is known as the Bacon-Gleason-Blodgett Homestead or Old Mill House. It combines brick end walls with clapboarded north and south sides, a five-bay facade, four tall end chimneys and a fieldstone foundation with granite facing. A one-and-a-half-story wing on the west end now serves as a kitchen and laundry. Inside are a spiral staircase, brick fireplaces and pine wainscotting. The house is described as the only example of its period and type in Bedford. Nathaniel Bacon built it, and later owners included Thomas Bacon, the Minuteman and miller Jonas Gleason, and the miller Simeon Blodgett. Nearby, John Wilson set up a corn mill in 1680, and a small community grew around the mill pond. This house and one other are the only remaining structures of that settlement. Later residents included Hugh Hunt, Bedford's first World War I casualty.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Early New England transitional Georgian (brick-end)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and used as a private residence; the two brick ends are described as in excellent condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.820761-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/7955/63795546/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/77000166.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000166/bcf72b4105-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/77000166/bcf72b4105-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bacon-Gleason-Blodgett_Homestead,_Bedford_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bacon-Gleason-Blodgett_Homestead,_Bedford_MA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03000792","name":"Wilson Mill-Old Burlington Road District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/wilson-mill-old-burlington-road-district-03000792/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795546","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon-Gleason-Blodgett_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4839915"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/bacon-gleason-blodgett-homestead-77000166/"}
