Clay Street holds one of the finest collections of ornamental cast iron in the country. Additional documentation from 2002 extends the significance to the civil rights era, identifying buildings tied to Black business, professional and legal leadership.","narrative":"Jackson Ward is a compact neighborhood of about six hundred townhouses spread over forty-two blocks in central Richmond, Virginia. Ninety percent of the houses date from the nineteenth century, and about one hundred predate the Civil War. The streets hold Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne and Eastlake dwellings, most built as middle-class housing in brick on narrow lots. Consistent scale, brick sidewalks laid in herringbone pattern and granite curbs unify the area. Clay Street, shaded by elms, contains one of the finest collections of ornamental cast iron in the country. Notable buildings include the 1863 Steamer Company No. 5 firehouse, the oldest remaining firehouse in Richmond, and the 1832 Dill House. Later documentation added the neighborhood's role in the civil rights era, naming law offices, medical offices, insurance companies, churches and homes linked to that movement. A high rate of resident ownership has helped keep the district stable.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Albert West (Hood Temple A.M.E. Many houses are subdivided, resident ownership is unusually high, and the more dilapidated houses sit near the northern edge by the Turnpike. The district had no specific historic protection at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.829398-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/6829/41682967/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/76002187.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76002187/ffa24bd764-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76002187/ffa24bd764-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Morgan Riley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jackson_Ward,_Richmond,_Virginia.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Riley</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jackson_Ward,_Richmond,_Virginia.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"71000982","name":"James River and Kanawha Canal Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/james-river-and-kanawha-canal-historic-district-71000982/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682967","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_Ward","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6117793"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/jackson-ward-historic-district-76002187/"}
