It includes Maryland House (1853), Pennsylvania House (1867) and the main Virginia House (1873-1876), plus a cottage row and guest houses.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the last and most complete of the mineral spas that flourished in western Virginia in the nineteenth century. It argues the galleried main buildings and matching cottages survive as one of the last complete Virginia Valley spring complexes built for public accommodation. Orkney ranked among the state's most famous spas from 1870 to 1890.","narrative":"Orkney Springs Hotel is a resort complex of wooden hotels and cottages in a small mountain basin in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Its oldest building, Maryland House, dates to 1853 and is a stuccoed frame structure ringed by double galleries with Greek Revival box columns. Pennsylvania House followed in 1867, and the huge four-story Virginia House, with 175 bedrooms and a third-floor ballroom, was built between 1873 and 1876. Seven identical two-story cottages, a manager's cottage, guest houses and a columned spring pavilion complete the group. Orkney was among the state's best-known spas from 1870 to 1890, drawing visitors with mineral waters and entertainments, and by its peak it could house 750 guests. After the resort trade declined near 1900, many sister spas vanished, but Orkney survived and later hosted a summer music camp and a symphony symposium. It was recognised as one of the most complete surviving nineteenth-century mineral spa complexes in the Virginia Valley.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and altered; used for a summer music camp and symphony symposium.
