Political gatherings during the struggle for independence from Mexico were held there. It is also described as one of the largest and oldest log pioneer plantation houses in Texas.","narrative":"Built beginning in 1833 near Independence, Texas, this two-story house of squared native cedar logs was the center of a large cotton plantation established by Dr. Asa Hoxey, a physician from Georgia and Alabama who arrived with his family and thirty slaves. The house originally had a central hall, four fireplaces, rubble stone chimneys and a long front gallery, and later received clapboard siding and two relocated frame rooms at the south end. A Gothic-paneled cedar library-parlor, added to the north end, was dismantled in the 1930s and rebuilt in a Houston home. Hoxey served as a delegate to the General Consultation and to the convention that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and hosted political meetings attended by Sam Houston, Anson Jones and Mirabeau Lamar. He was also named Medical Censor of the Republic of Texas. Little else remains of the original plantation buildings, and the house is regarded as one of the largest and oldest log plantation houses in the state.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Dr. Asa Hoxey, Builder","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as being restored by its owners for use as a weekend family home; the original gallery had been reconstructed from photographs and literature.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.957965-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/9739/40973930/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/76002083.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40973930","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002516"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/washington-county/hoxey-asa-house-76002083/"}
