It is one of the oldest remaining downtown buildings and a rare reminder of the Black community's role in 19th-century Houston. It is also tied to Black leaders and early Black education in the city.","narrative":"Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, at 313 Robin Street in Houston, is the surviving landmark of a once-thriving Black settlement on the west side of downtown. The congregation formed in January 1866 as the city's first Black Baptist church and met first in a brush arbor and then a frame building. Contractor Richard Allen, a member who also served in the Texas Legislature, built a one-story brick church between 1875 and 1879. In the 1890s, under Rev. Frederick L. Lights, it was enlarged into a two-story T-shaped brick building with a tower. A 1915 storm removed the steeple, and 1930s remodeling added stained glass windows, an entrance vestibule and rear additions. Under Rev. John Henry Yates, the church supported Black education and helped found the Houston Baptist Academy in 1885. Downtown expansion in the 1950s erased the surrounding neighborhood, leaving the church among the few reminders of Black contributions to nineteenth-century Houston.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Richard Allen, Robert Jones","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in good condition, in religious use; surrounded by parking lots and modern construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.160656-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/9724/40972418/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/76002038.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76002038/b44fbbf99a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76002038/b44fbbf99a-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"WhisperToMe","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AntiochChurchHoustonTX.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">WhisperToMe</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AntiochChurchHoustonTX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972418","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antioch_Missionary_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4775024"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/harris-county/antioch-missionary-baptist-church-76002038/"}
