It was built by Samuel Stoner between 1798 and 1801 and enlarged in the 1830s and 1850s.","why_significant":"The nomination describes the house as a good example of a late 18th-century rural Pennsylvania farmhouse, with largely original interior woodwork and a sponge-decorated living room ceiling. It also cites its association with Dr. Charles Nes, who developed Nes Silicon Steel while living there in the 1860s and 1870s, and with General Michael Doudle, a local militia and political leader.","narrative":"A stone farmhouse in West Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania, begun by Samuel Stoner between 1798 and 1801 in the German style as a one-and-a-half-story house. A full second story was added in the 1830s, and a two-story stone rear wing followed in the 1850s. The interior retains much of its original woodwork, including beaded moldings, pegged sunken panels in the living room, and a sponge-decorated ceiling. The basement kitchen has a large walk-in fireplace and an exposed spring that runs through a stone channel to an outside spring house. Three mid-nineteenth-century outbuildings survive. Dr. Charles Nes lived here in the 1860s and 1870s, when he developed Nes Silicon Steel, and General Michael Doudle, a militia leader and Pennsylvania state legislator, was also a resident. Of the original farm of more than 120 acres, only six remain, the rest being inundated by the Indian Rock Dam.","period_of_significance":"c. 1800-1850","architect_builder":"Samuel Stoner (original builder)","architectural_style":"German style stone house; Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.614194-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/76001684.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001684/33edf0ad00-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001684/33edf0ad00-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:STONER_HOMESTEAD_WEST_MANCHESTER_TWP_YORK_COUNTY_PA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998877","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Stoner_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7412712"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/york-county/stoner-samuel-homestead-76001684/"}
