It closely resembles the 1699 Winslow House in Marshfield, and the form suggests Bryant may have built that house too. Its builder was a prosperous artisan tied to the North River shipbuilding community.","narrative":"Built in 1698 at 768 Main Street in Norwell, this two-story, center-chimney colonial house has changed very little in more than three centuries. Its five-bay shingled facade has a pedimented doorway with a transom of five bull's eye lights, and a large central chimney serves six fireplaces. Inside, the original floor plan, wide-plank floors, mantels and Jacobean stair banisters survive. The house was built by Thomas Bryant, a 23-year-old house carpenter and sawmill owner connected to the North River shipbuilding community, who later served as a magistrate and in the General Court. Its large scale, paneling and mouldings closely match the Winslow House of 1699 in Marshfield, which suggests Bryant may have built that house as well. The Bryant family held it until 1769, when it passed to the Cushing family. The only major alterations came in 1937-38, when utilities were installed and some plaster and floors were repaired. It is valued as a nearly unaltered late seventeenth century New England house.","period_of_significance":"1698","architect_builder":"Thomas Bryant","architectural_style":"New England Colonial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and occupied as a private residence, with plumbing, heat and electricity added in 1937-38.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.54081-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/7964/63796497/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/76001613.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001613/a29905b8fc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001613/a29905b8fc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorwellMA_BryantCushingHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorwellMA_BryantCushingHouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"82004432","name":"Norwell Village Area Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/norwell-village-area-historic-district-82004432/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796497","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryant%E2%80%93Cushing_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4980543"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/plymouth-county/bryant-cushing-house-76001613/"}
