The builder is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the house as a typical example of mid-19th-century rural residential architecture and as one of the few such farm homes left in Union County. It was also the home of Samuel G. Gilcrist, a prominent farmer, Grange master and township trustee. Nearby farm buildings have largely been razed for industrial plants.","narrative":"Built around 1875, this two-story brick farmhouse sits on a brick foundation on an L-shaped plan about thirty-four feet in each direction, with a gabled roof, two-over-two wood windows and stone sills. An ornate front porch has turned columns, scroll brackets and a bracketed frieze. A larger veranda once wrapped the north and west sides but has been removed, and two frame additions stand on the east side. Inside, the original fireplaces are gone and the ceilings and floors have been covered over. The house was the home of Samuel G. Gilcrist, who arrived on the 226-acre farm in 1865, bought it in 1874 and owned it until 1915. He raised fine stock, served as Master of the local Grange and sat on the township trustees. It was listed as a typical mid-19th-century rural residence, one of few remaining in Union County as industrial plants replaced neighboring farms. Restoration and reuse as a conference center were planned.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good, altered condition. The owner, a fertilizer company, planned an exterior restoration and intended to use the building as an information and conference center.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.696006-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001537.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991785","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/union-county/gilcrist-house-76001537/"}
