It now serves as a museum.","why_significant":"It is the last building of an important educational institution that operated for more than half a century, essentially as a one-man school run by Samuel Bissell. It is also an unusual example of vernacular stone construction with rock-faced and vermiculated masonry.","narrative":"Built in 1866-1867 on Darrow Road in Twinsburg, this sandstone building was the final home of the Twinsburg Institute, a school led by minister Samuel Bissell. Bissell founded the school after becoming pastor in 1828 and taught there for decades. By 1848 it had four buildings, 300 students and seven teachers, and charged very low tuition so that all could attend. Students included members of the Seneca, Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes. After financial trouble around the Civil War forced the sale of buildings, Bissell, then 70, largely built this one himself. The school ended with his death at 98. The building was originally two stories; the upper story was removed around 1920, a cement block kitchen was added, and many windows were reduced. The Grange acquired it in 1920, and the Twinsburg Historical Society received it in 1964. It is valued as the last surviving school building and as vernacular stonework.","period_of_significance":"1867-1895","architect_builder":"Samuel Bissell","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Currently used as a museum and meeting space; altered around 1920 when the second story was removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.043224-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001535.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001535/322be250ca-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001535/322be250ca-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ksponsler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Twinsburg_Historical_Society.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ksponsler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Twinsburg_Historical_Society.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991573","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twinsburg_Institute","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137196173"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/summit-county/twinsburg-institute-76001535/"}
