It was the original school for Lake Township.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is one of a rapidly disappearing group of one-room schoolhouses. It served as the township's only school for over 50 years. After 1900 the Hartville School replaced it and it was used for other purposes until the school board began restoring it.","narrative":"Lake Township School is a one-story, rectangular brick building east of Uniontown in Stark County, Ohio, built around 1850. It has a standing seam metal gable roof, wide cornice and frieze boards, a cut stone foundation, and stone quoins at the corners. The south gable end holds a center entrance behind a small enclosed porch of recent construction, and the 6/6 windows have plain stone lintels and sills. It was the original school for the township and served as its only school for over 50 years. After 1900 the Hartville School was built and the old building was abandoned for educational use. It was later used as a harness shop and as an Amish casket manufacturing building. Frame additions made after 1900 have been removed in a restoration by the local Board of Education, which uses the building for its offices and wants to maintain it as part of the school district's history. It is described as one of a disappearing group of one-room schoolhouses.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (noted in reviewer comments on the data sheet)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored by the local Board of Education; the interior was altered to house the board's offices, and later frame additions were removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.7755-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001528.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001528/1f4d7beca3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001528/1f4d7beca3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lake_Township_School_(Uniontown,_OH).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lake_Township_School_(Uniontown,_OH).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991454","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138686265"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/stark-county/lake-township-school-76001528/"}
