Hine.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the dominant late 19th century home in Mantua, symbolizing the ambition of a successful businessman. It is also described as an excellent, well-preserved example of the Queen Anne style with Shingle and Stick elements. It was considered the center of village society in the early 20th century.","narrative":"Dominating the village of Mantua, Ohio, this large wood-frame house at 4624 West Prospect Street was built around 1895 for Horace L. Hine, a local banker and lumber-mill partner. Its design combines Queen Anne and Shingle features with Stick Style framing beneath the shingles. A wraparound veranda, a three-story octagonal corner tower with a pyramidal roof, projecting bay windows, a porte-cochere and tall brick chimneys give the exterior its irregular profile, while a rock-faced ashlar foundation supports the frame. Inside, paneled halls, rock maple woodwork, nine fireplaces and a carved staircase survive largely unchanged. Hine opened a bank in Mantua in 1885 and later became president of the First National Bank. The house was regarded as the center of village society in the early twentieth century and was compared to Theodore Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill. An oral tradition credits architect Henry L. Searles of Ravenna, though this is undocumented.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1895","architect_builder":"Henry L.
