Robert Patterson and now used as a museum.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as an especially fine example of southwest Ohio architecture, a Federal-type farmhouse influenced by southern culture. It is also tied to Col. Robert Patterson, an early frontiersman and settler, and to his descendant John H. Patterson, founder of National Cash Register Corporation.","narrative":"Rubicon Farm is a brick farmhouse at 1815 Brown Street in Dayton, built in 1816 for Col. Robert Patterson, a frontier fighter who bought the farm and mill from Daniel C. Cooper in 1804. The house sits on a coursed stone foundation and has a recessed two-story porch with Doric pillars and a balustraded deck, giving it an L-shaped plan. The north facade is laid in Flemish bond and has a heavily moulded Victorian entrance porch. A kitchen wing and a one-story lecture hall were added later. The property is significant for its architecture, a southern-influenced Federal farmhouse type found in southwestern Ohio, and for its family associations. Patterson's descendant John H. Patterson founded the National Cash Register Corporation. Jefferson Patterson donated the property to the City of Dayton in 1953 for civic, cultural and educational use. It now operates as a museum showing the life of a prosperous pioneer settler in the Great Miami Valley, on a nine-acre site.","period_of_significance":"1816","architect_builder":"Robert Patterson","architectural_style":"Federal with Italianate elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and used as a museum, owned by the City of Dayton and managed by a board of trustees; interior restored in 1939 and revised in 1966.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.316582-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/76001500.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001500/ab50853569-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/76001500/ab50853569-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Greg5030 Photo by Greg Hume","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RubiconFarm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Greg5030 Photo by Greg Hume</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RubiconFarm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990524","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patterson_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7148445"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/montgomery-county/rubicon-farm-76001500/"}
